Frederick P. Harris

ASIJ's Headmaster in 1961

ASIJ link:

Dr. Frederick P. Harris, passed away on September 20, 2001 in Portland, Oregon. He was headmaster of the American School in Tokyo from 1957 to 1966. In 1966, the school’s library was named the Frederick P. Harris Library in his honor. He was a professor and chairman of the Oregon State University philosophy department from 1967 to 1976 and retired in 1980.

Since then:

The following note was provided by Judy Garbutt (Dr. Harris' daughter.)

3-28-2002

My dad finally came back to the U.S. in 1966. He eventually became Chairman of the Philosophy Department at Oregon State University and later returned to Japan for several years in several capacities.

I have provided ASIJ with a complete packet of information and pictures. The office of Alumni Affairs at ASIJ, I believe, received the information from me after my father's death. Please check with that office first, then let me know if the information I provided to them would be satisfactory for you. Hopefully they have kept the information. Some of the information provided was from Who's Who, news paper articles, etc. with dates.

Hopefully, this will give you a head start. My husband, Ian and I will be at the upcoming reunion/celebration in October. That could provide us with an opportunity to chat.

Judy Garbutt
