Reischauer-Simon, Joan

Graduated From Another High School

Since then:

After leaving ASIJ at the end of 7th grade (in 1956), I returned to the US (via Europe on a Japanese freighter and en route 1 had my appendix out in Casablanca-a memorable trip). I moved back to Belmont, MA (outside of Boston), where I had grown up, and graduated from Belmont High School in 1961. (I was actually in Japan for a few months at the end of my senior year, having come with my parents when my father was appointed US Ambassador). The following year I attended Oberlin College in Ohio, but left after my first year and returned to Japan where I was an assistant kindergarten teacher at Nishimachi International School for one year. After working for a couple of years in Cambridge, MA, I went back to college at Tufts University and graduated in 1967.

My first job out of college was at Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company, where I stayed 10 years, working first in Boston and then in New York City. After leaving Houghton Muffin, I worked for other New York publishing companies, including Simon & Schuster. In 1977 I met Bill Simon, an attorney in NYC, and we were married two years later. The following year we moved to Larchmont, a small suburb just north of NYC along the Long Island Sound, and we are still living there now. I stopped working when my first child, Kate, was born at the end of 1981. My son, Richard, was born three years later. Kate is currently a sophomore at Dartmouth College and Richard is a junior in high school.

I find myself quite busy with volunteer activities in the local schools, our church, and several civic organizations. I regret that I have not been back to Japan since 1963, but my family and I would like to plan a trip there in the next few years.
