Lee, Tien Min

Senior memory:

tall and quiet ... "Che" ... "Come on, Isao!" ... translate for George, Tien Min ... "Huh?"

Since then:

Upon graduating from ASIJ, I remained in Tokyo to help out and take care of my sick father. However, I maintained and improved my education through night classes at Sophia University, Tokyo. In 1964, I received acceptance to Virginia Polytechnic Institute, in Blacksburg, Virginia. It was a natural choice for me to major in electronic and electrical engineering, since building radios was a favorite pastime of mine at ASIJ. Leaving Tokyo and arriving in Blacksburg proved to be a shock for me. Having experienced the busy city pace for most of my life, the quiet open farmland of Blacksburg contrasted greatly. It was a university town, consisting of only one theater. I had to quickly adjust to the large student population, after spending nine years in the small classes of ASIJ. However, I acclimated quickly and thoroughly enjoyed my years at Virginia Tech, and graduated in 1967.

Afterwards, I moved to Long Island, NY, where I worked at Underwriters Laboratories Inc., a product-safety company. Working there presented many business opportunities to travel to Japan, where I often reminisced about ASIJ. I often wondered about my old classmates and friends, knowing that we would never be able to be all together again. ASIJ provided me with many nostalgic memories that I will always carry. In 1975 I married my wife, and we recently celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary. We have four girls, currently ages 25, 20 and 17, the younger being twins. They have proved to be quiet a handful, although my family has proven to be rewarding.

After working at Underwriters Laboratories Inc. as a project engineer for eleven years, I relocated to JVC, where I assisted in the creation of the television manufacturing facility in New Jersey. This relocation has moved my family and I to Wyckoff, NJ, a small suburban town where we have lived for the past 16 years. I recently transferred to the corporate and administrative capacity of NC Americas Corp. and am also active in my community, helping whenever the opportunity arises. I owe some of this success to the invaluable experience of living in Japan and attending ASIJ. Because of this education, I have a better understanding and appreciation of the Japanese culture and language. I have been presented with many interesting opportunities in the past, and I hope to build stronger ties with my childhood classmates.
