| Since then:
My family returned to
Indonesia in early 1961, but I stayed to graduate from
ASIJ. I started at Colorado State University because Ms.
Alpert (remember her?) got me in. I hated it. Colorado was
cold and I couldn't afford the tuition. My roommate told
me that the U of Hawaii had no out-of-state tuition and
... showed me surfing pictures. I applied to UH for the
following year and was accepted. That summer (1962) I got
a job in Arizona and made enough dough for the next school
year in Hawaii. In 1964 the Dean of Students invited me
for a chat and told me that as a foreign student I was
expected to attend class. I told him that was difficult
because it interfered with my surfing, social life, and
working hours. That was the end of my tropical island
adventure.
I transferred to
California State University, Sacramento in September 1964
because foreign student tuition was half the amount of
out-of-state tuition. To make a long story short, there I
met a "cool, blond chick." We got married.
Like any soap opera,
this story is episodic. I'll be working on the next
installment for our 60 years reunion. |
