Sa, Sophie

Senior memory:

"Meeting today!" ... willing and eager to work ... darling clothes ... "Sport" ... "Don't dare mention the word Chochin!" ... Ahah-ah-ah-oh-oh-ow! ..."Shut up, Lees." ..."Sorry, can't stop to talk."

Since then:

Since 1973, I've been living in New York City, on the Upper West Side in Manhattan. I got here via Wellesley College, Harvard, field work in Taiwan, a couple of years in Palo Alto.  I came to NY when my then-husband (whom I'd met in graduate school and married in '68) got a job at Columbia U. We separated in '76 and divorced in '77.  No kids.  I worked at the Center for Policy Research (in NYC) for 3 years, the Social Science Research Council (also in NYC) for 5, and then was hired to start the Matsushita Foundation (now "Panasonic Foundation") in 1985.  I've been its "founding executive director" ever since!  My office is in Secaucus, NJ, just 5 miles west of the Lincoln Tunnel.

Education:
1961 American School in Japan
Wellesley College Bachelor's degree in history
Harvard Master's degree in East Asian Regional Studies
Doctorate degree in Sociology and Far Eastern Languages
