My particular field
of interest is comparative politics, primarily the politics of
advanced democratic nations. I am fascinated by the wide variety of
ways in which nations organize their political life in order to
address their political, economic and social problems. Comparing
political systems is of value in at least three ways. First, by
identifying similarities among nations, we can begin to develop
generalizations about what countries have in common and what they
can learn from each other. Second, by identifying differences among
nations, we can acquire insight into the uniqueness of each human
society, and gain a better understanding and appreciation of the
remarkable diversity of the modern world. Finally, it is just plain
fun to learn about other countries, and I think it is always
valuable to keep in mind that ours is not the only, nor necessarily
the best, way in which to govern a nation.
